SAQ Faugères ‘Champs Pentus’ 2021, Domaine Frédéric Brouca
A wine for friends
Every year, the Faugères appellation in Languedoc is the one with the most estates that leave a lasting mark on our gustatory imagination.
I still remember my first meeting with Frédéric Brouca in 2014. Married to a Canadian diplomat, he naturally spends a lot of time on this side of the ocean. In 2012, he bought his 10-hectare estate, which is managed entirely using organic farming methods, and produces low-intervention wines.
The ‘Champs Pentus’ cuvée is the estate’s flagship wine, made exclusively from old vines with a composition of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 30% Carignan. The grapes are vinified with minimal extraction and the wine is aged in vats and 10% neutral oak.
It is a medium-bodied wine, focused on very ripe dark fruits (Grenache), with a subtle animal side (Carignan) supported by a saline/briny framework reminiscent of olive tapenade (Syrah).
- To pair with it: a hearty pizza with tomatoes, Kalamata olives, artichokes, and mozzarella—and why not add anchovies to finish it off!
- A little trivia: with only about sixty estates across 2000 hectares, it is normal to come across few Faugères on our shelves…
- To better understand Grenache: Get on the waiting list for our autumn '24 varietal aperitif session!
- For a Faugères you can tuck away and age, the 2020 Transhumance from Pierre Gaillard is $28 at the SAQ (14861987)
