SAQ Bairrada DOC Baga 2020, Vadio Wines, Portugal
Red with pleasure
A few months ago, we introduced you to the Bairrada region and one of its very interesting wines (which is still available). Well, this week, we are highlighting the appellation again with a 100% Baga from the Vadio family. With this project started in 2005, Luis Paträo and his partner work some 10 hectares organically, highlighting the Baga grape variety as well as Bical and Cercial for whites.
This red comes from vines across several plots, all sharing the same clay-limestone soils and expressing the vineyard's proximity to the Atlantic. Each plot is vinified manually at optimal maturity levels depending on the site. Classic vinification with light extraction and aging in used barrels for 18 months.
On the nose, there is a profusion of fruit and spices, followed by a fresh and ample palate, supported by fine, textured tannins. Once again, this is a counter-intuitive wine for lovers of heavy Portuguese reds, as suppleness and finesse are the order of the day.
- To accompany it: spatchcock chicken 😊,
- For the anecdote: if you happen to be in the region on the first Saturday of May, seven high-quality estates (including Vadio), calling themselves the ‘Friends of Baga’, open their doors to the public for friendly tastings,
- To better understand Portuguese wines: keep an eye out for the announcement of this theme next autumn!
- To revisit the region and one of its very good reds, the Bairrada ‘Gilda’ 2022, Tiago Teles, Portugal / $28 at the SAQ (13629001)
