SAQ Beaujolais-Villages 2022, Kewin ‘Keke’ Descombes
Great juice for a Kevin party!
When your father is Georges Descombes (an accomplice in the "Gang of Four" with Lapierre, Breton, and Foillard), you can be forgiven for a first name like Kewin. Since 2013, following in the family footsteps, he has been producing organic and/or natural wines using indigenous yeasts, semi-carbonic maceration, and very few, if any, additives.
It must be said that for the past fifty years, the region has been at the forefront of these "obscure" practices championed by Jules Chauvet and adopted by a multitude of winemakers. Whether or not you are a devotee of organic and natural wine, it is hard to deny the contribution of people like the Descombes family in the repositioning and changing perception of Beaujolais. Let it be known: drinking "bojo" these days is trendy…
And the Gamay produced here? It comes from old vines in a terroir bordering Brouilly belonging to the family, yielding an elegant, silky wine with aromas dominated by strawberry and raspberry. Round and luscious as it should be, the time spent in barrels is appreciated for polishing the acidity of the natural wine.

- A bit of trivia: the birth of Beaujolais Nouveau dates back to 1951, when a decree stipulated that AOC wines could only be sold from December 15th onward. Complaints from unions desperate for francs led to "certain wines" being sold without waiting for that date.
