SAQ Chinon Vieilles Vignes 2021, Domaine De La Marinière
Old vines looking for young palates...
Domaine de la Marinière is yet another family story. In the eastern part of the appellation, the Desbourdes family has been producing almost exclusively Cabernet Franc on 14 hectares since 1965. The third generation, headed by Boris Desbourdes, transitioned the estate to organic farming a few years ago and highlights the three great terroirs of the Chinon area.
This ‘vieilles vignes’ is specifically from the limestone and flinty clay hillsides and shows us how the appellation can be traditional while embracing modern and bold winemaking. Although '21 was a difficult vintage (spring frosts), one will appreciate the mastery in the grape handling.
In the end, a red with a nose of blackcurrant and raspberries, a full and almost fleshy mouthfeel, yet still supported by fine tannins and lovely acidity. Very pleasant to drink with just enough complexity to keep things interesting.
- To pair with it: it’s time to bring out your beautiful yellow tomatoes and make them spectacular in the form of a tomato tatin,
- For the etymological anecdote: the *Desbourdes* vineyard is located in the village of *Panzoult*, which was once part of the *Barjot* family lordship until the revolution…
