Polycharming Piedmontese
Matunei is a young couple in an old region who look to the future while safeguarding the past. Alberto and Carla take a restorative approach to their region by practicing a vast and surprising polyculture. Firewood, olive oil, agricultural training, and, for the pleasure of our taste buds, viticulture.
The result is an off-trend wine due to its blend and presentation. Don't be put off by its crown cap, its label designed by an Irish tattoo artist, its convivial alcohol level, and its plump sugar content. Beyond these daunting factors, you will have a vibrant wine in your glass.
Ever-present red fruits (given its Freisa), supple yet firm tannins (mastery of the Nebbiolo) resting on nervous muscles (expression of Barbera), all resulting from aging in stainless steel before resting for 4 months in old barrels.
Rustic but clean and well-groomed. Presentable for dinner as well as for an aperitif. We will be stocking up…
· To pair with it: A honey and citrus glazed chicken thigh on the BBQ,
· For the anecdote: The lighthouse on the label is in honor of Frida, the couple's daughter,
· To better understand the classic Piedmont at the cottage this summer: "The Twenty-Three Days of the City of Alba" by Beppe Fenoglio, or the even more famous "The Horseman on the Roof" by Jean Giono
· For fun: From the same producer, their non-vintage Macaïa without the Freisa. Still a few bottles in the network at $27 in SAQ (15074379)
