Reigning with Gamay

We introduced you to this appellation during the second chapter of this blog last March. It is rare and highly sought after, with its 550ha and its recent classification as the 10th cru of Beaujolais 35 years ago now.

It is now Guy Breton and his visionary work that lead us to present this top-tier Gamay to you. At the origin of the Beaujolais renaissance by banishing the 71b yeast (the one that gives off banana aromas...) from his cellars, he would quickly be associated by wine merchants with the Gang of Four.

Lapierre, Fouillard, Thévenet, and Breton would lead this movement, which sought to achieve better grape ripening, work organically without chaptalization, and above all, take the terroir into account for greater precision. The result? We quickly moved away from those watery, caricatural Beaujolais that tasted like English candy, approaching instead Beaujolais wines that, while taut and still refreshing, rely on a spectacular spice texture and mineral structure.

Liquid pleasure that we would love in a magnum, given how our glasses seem to have holes in them...

  • To pair with it: Salad of red, Chioggia, golden, and every other kind of beet with toasted sesame seeds for texture,
  • For the trivia: Guy Breton is nicknamed "P'tit Max," not because of his height, but in reference to his father,
  • To better understand Gamay: Keep informed about our varietal happy hour on the subject,
  • To go further in your quest for Breton: Morgon 2021 at $37 at the SAQ (12258885)
