Nebbia bianca!
It’s no secret to you by now that we have a natural affinity for Italian whites which, even if little-known to enthusiasts, are often excellent surprises in the glass.
This Roero Arneis is no exception, with an explosion of fruit and flowers balanced by a subtle minerality. It is crafted by a pioneer of biodynamics in the region, Sergio Marchiso, who works his 20 or so hectares—mostly Arneis—in a ‘modern’ way.
Whether for his Nebbiolos or Barberas, in amphorae or stainless steel tanks, or for his traditionally-made spumante, you will find surprising wines on the palate from this house, especially for the Roero.
It is worth knowing that even though it is trendy today, the Piedmontese grape variety Arneis was originally planted between rows of Nebbiolo. The reason being that, ripening faster, its sweet berries attracted birds, thus leaving the precious Nebbiolo in peace.
It wasn't until the end of the 60s that the Vietti family accidentally produced (usually, they made sweet wine or vermouth from this grape) a dry version that would become a success of esteem and a commercial success. Today, the appellation produces nearly 7 million bottles.
- To pair with it: Linguine with shrimp, scallops, and a cream and cheese sauce.
- Fun fact: Before becoming a sought-after grape variety again, Arneis was called nebbia bianca, white nebbiolo…
- To better understand the wines of Piedmont: Get on the waiting list for the workshop on the subject this autumn.
