A Basque for aperitif

The Basque provinces are a fascinating region, with San Sebastian as the capital of the pintxo and txakoli. Astobiza is a property located in the Alava DO part (northwest) and borders the province of Cantabria (better known for the Rioja appellation).

Basque country wines were renowned until the mid-19th century, when the vineyards produced highly acclaimed Alava reds. As the oidium crisis struck northern Spain, production was concentrated on wines—mostly white—near the ocean to better withstand the catastrophe. The result was a shift toward white wines that were low in alcohol, highly acidic, and slightly carbonated.

If we stopped the description here, you might think of Portuguese Vinho Verde, and you wouldn't be far off. However, and fortunately, modern winemaking and continental influences make this txakoli an excellent introduction to this fascinating region.

The local grape varieties, Hondarrabi Zuri (Corbu) and Zuratie (Petit Corbu), will sound familiar to fans of Scrabble as well as wines from the southwest. This small part of the region (100ha) produces rounder and smoother wines, so you will be less startled by the tension and acidity typically found in the appellation. Aromas of green apples, young peaches, and Anjou pear support its minerality and freshness.

If you are ever torn between a Riesling or a crisp Chenin from Touraine, this Basque wine will fit perfectly in the middle.

  • To pair with it: Mussels in escabeche that you prepare with an excellent wine vinegar so as not to kill the... wine.
  • For the anecdote: If you want to get into the "wine bar" spirit, txakoli is served at arm's length (above the head) to pour the liquid into a flat-bottomed glass on the counter, the goal being to dissipate the wine's natural effervescence. Long beard and tattoos are optional...
  • To better understand Basque wines: We will offer an aperitif session on the subject at the start of the new school year.
  • For an exploration of other txakoli whites from a different part of the appellation, you will find this 2022 Getariako DO from Zudugarai for $22 at the SAQ (15167250)
